A good bet on a date that has not arrived
WasteNote is built by AgriDigital, the company behind WasteMatrix, and the pitch is coherent: WasteMatrix covers receiving sites for Phase 1, WasteNote will cover carriers for Phase 2, one company, both phases, one supplier. For an operator who wants a single vendor across the whole movement, that is a real proposition and the group has already shipped a working DEFRA integration, which de-risks the promise more than a first-time startup's would.
The product itself is a driver app plus an office dashboard they call Dock: WTN capture with producer, carrier, destination, weights, EWC code and signature; photo evidence on every load; a live ticket feed in the office; search by site, date, vehicle or EWC; driver management; and job booking on the Pro tier. It works offline, which is more than several better-funded products in this market manage, and the pricing is very low: free for life for one driver, £10 for the app plus the dashboard, £30 for three drivers, £50 with job booking, and £5 a month for each extra driver.
The Solo tier deserves credit for how it is framed. It is the full driver app, free for life, with tickets stored in the Dock so an upgrade needs no migration. Their own words are that a one-man-band carrier deserves a working compliance tool rather than a free trial with a clock on it, which is the right instinct.
What you would be buying today
A waitlist. The homepage banner says public release soon, the main calls to action are join the waitlist and register interest, the beta is distributed through Apple TestFlight, and the pricing note refers to when paid tiers begin. The same page also has a section headed available now, which is a tension worth resolving with them before you commit.
The DEFRA position follows from that. Every claim WasteNote makes about digital waste tracking is future tense and conditional: Phase 2 ready when the API goes live, compliant as soon as the Phase 2 API is live, your app just updates when Phase 2 lands. That is honest, and it is also correct, because DEFRA's carrier API does not exist yet. The only present-tense DEFRA credential in the family belongs to WasteMatrix, not to WasteNote. WasteNote itself is not on the GOV.UK provider list; WasteMatrix is.
One line on their site is worth quoting because of what it is: under a heading of Recognition, they say they are listed by Google's AI Overview as a DEFRA-engaged Digital Waste Tracking software vendor. An AI-generated search summary is not a DEFRA listing and not an accreditation of any kind. We mention it not to score a point but because if you are evaluating vendors on their DEFRA standing, that is the sort of line to read closely.
Price, and the case for waiting
£10 a month for a driver app and an office dashboard is cheaper than anything we offer, and £5 per extra driver is cheaper than anything anybody offers. Founding members get it free until carriers are mandated in October 2027, with a founding rate locked afterwards, capped at the first hundred carriers. If your only deadline is 2027 and you like the team, waiting costs you very little and could save you a lot.
The counter-argument is that most carriers have a nearer problem than 2027. The receiving sites they tip at are mandated from October 2026, and those sites will increasingly want the movement data digitally rather than on a docket. A carrier already filing digitally makes that receiver's job accurate instead of retyped, and that is available now rather than next year.
Their VAT treatment is not stated anywhere, so the £10 and £50 may or may not be what you pay. Ours exclude VAT and say so.
