Licensed, properly

Upper tier or lower tier? Two minutes to be sure.

Every business that transports waste must register as a waste carrier - but which tier depends on whose waste it is. Carry anyone else's waste, or your own construction or demolition waste, and you need upper tier. Only ever carry the ordinary waste your own business produces, and lower tier is enough.

  • Upper tier

Other people's waste, or your own construction and demolition waste. In England registration costs £191.02 and renews every 3 years at £130.25 - check gov.uk for current fees.

  • Lower tier

Only waste your own business produces, construction and demolition excepted. Registration is free and doesn't expire.

  • LoadSnap tracks the renewal

Your registration number and expiry sit in the compliance dashboard, with warnings before the 3-year renewal comes round.

Questions

Good to know.

If you transport waste as part of your business - even waste you produced yourself - you must register with the Environment Agency in England (or SEPA in Scotland, NRW in Wales, NIEA in Northern Ireland). Tradespeople carrying only their own non-construction waste usually just need the free lower tier registration; carrying anyone else's waste, or your own construction and demolition waste, needs upper tier.
