    Questions

    Frequently asked

How do I check if a waste carrier is licensed?

Enter the carrier's business name or their registration number (for example CBDU123456) above. The checker searches the Environment Agency public register of waste carriers, brokers and dealers and shows their registration details and status.

What does a CBDU number mean?

CBDU is the prefix on an upper-tier waste carrier, broker or dealer registration issued by the Environment Agency. Lower-tier registrations use CBDL. The number identifies the registered business.

What is the difference between upper and lower tier?

Upper-tier registration is required for businesses that carry, broker or deal in waste as a regular part of their work, and must be renewed every three years. Lower-tier registration is for a narrower set of activities and does not expire.

    Why should I check a carrier's licence?

Your duty of care requires you to pass waste only to an authorised person. Checking the register protects you from fines and reputational harm if waste is mishandled or fly-tipped.
